The King is Coming
“I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. - Numbers 24:17a

One day we will see Jesus face to face, we will be able to look into his eyes and hear him speaking. But for now, we experience his presence with us through his Holy Spirit. On the most recent Alpha retreat, many people had powerful experiences of the Holy Spirit: two prayed to receive Jesus, two fell to the ground overwhelmed by the power of the Spirit, others experienced heat and power, some felt themselves welling up with tears and for others it was a deep sense of peace. After a week of turmoil before the weekend, I was overwhelmed by the peace I felt throughout the weekend – it was so good. You could see love and joy breaking out on people’s faces and watch compassion grow between the different group members and you could hear the difference in the worship.
By the end of the retreat people, who just a week before were barely singing, were belting out the songs, with arms raised just wanting to express their adoration to God. It was a foretaste of things to come when Jesus returns and we can be fully in his presence, see him with our eyes, feel his arms embracing us. As with other experiences I have had of being filled with the Holy Spirit, this weekend left me feeling filled to overflowing but also increased my yearning for Jesus’ return. As this verse suggests, there is so much more to come, to look forward to! Yet the more we allow the Holy Spirit to fill us and lead us, the more we experience God’s love and the more we long to be fully present with him without the distractions, deception and destruction of the world and the enemy. Even so, Come Lord Jesus!
