Today I have begotten you
For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”? - Hebrews 1:5

On Christmas day, our family will often video chat with close friends and family who live far away. It is a sweet moment to see nieces and nephews smiling, acting silly, and showing off Christmas presents to us. I am grateful for the technology that helps us feel closer to those with whom we can’t be present. But it’s not the same as being there in person. Nothing can replace sharing special moments face-to-face with those we love.
God did not just save us for heaven. Even if news of his saving work were to have come through the most spectacular angelic messenger, it would still not be the same. He came in the flesh- Jesus Christ, God the son. He came all the way from heaven to earth to proclaim the Good News that God’s kingdom was near even at hand. Not only did Jesus proclaim it, he perfectly completed all the work that God the Father gave him to do. He accomplished it by giving his own body and blood on the cross to save us from sin and bring us new life in him.
“Father God, I praise you this day for you have come to this world to rescue sinners like me out of darkness and into your glorious light. I thank you that in Jesus Christ, you are not distant and far off, but you are truly Immanuel, God with Us. Fill my heart with gratitude to you in this time and always. Thank you for calling me to be your child. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ my Lord, Amen.
