Angel Informs Mary

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. - Luke 1:35

In this verse, I hear God telling me that he will give me specific instruction for the call he has placed on my life.  The angel of the Lord told Mary what was about to happen to her.  Mary asked “how,” and the angel specifically told her.  I find myself asking God how certain things will play out in my life too.  God has a specific call on my life and when I ask him how he will accomplish things through me, I wait with expectancy that he will guide me and make my path clear.

Some years ago, I was unexpectedly laid off from a job.  I prayed and asked God what he wanted me to do next.  He told me to go back to school and become a teacher, so I did that.  Recently, I obtained a degree in education.  After school was finished, I prayed again asking God to show me what the next steps were.  Where should I work, Lord?  Where do you want me to go?  “Here,” he said, and then showed me where he wanted me to work.  God has a specific purpose for me, for all of us.  It is unlikely that he will map out our entire life’s work all at once. But I knew that once I opened my heart to God and wanted his will to be done in my life, he made it clear to me what I was to do.

Even on a daily basis I ask God what he has for me today.  What can I do today for the kingdom of God by your Holy Spirit?  Where will you send me, Lord?  What do you want me to say to this person?  Then I wait with expectancy for specific instruction from the Most High.  And he always instructs me of the next step.

Lord Jesus, please align my will with yours.  Help me to follow your instructions for the call you have on my life and help me to be an obedient servant.  Amen.
