Now the LORD had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, from your family
and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you.”

Genesis 12:1 NKJV

I didn’t grow up in a Christian home even though my grandfather was a pastor for the Assembly of God in Brazil. My grandparents prayed for the salvation of our family and I’m the living proof that prayers are answered (grandmother is 93 and still does pray)! I became Christian when I was 21 years old. However it was not until I was 23 that I had a transformation encounter with Jesus. Everything changed in a weekend retreat in November of 1999, in Brasilia (where I am from). In that meeting I was healed from asthma and recommitted my life to Jesus with all my heart and Romans 8:1 became one of my life scriptures. From that moment on a lot was transformed in my life and scriptures became alive being the lamp for my feet.

These days we are confronted every day with headlines filled with reports of wars, conflict, corruption, scandals, crime, fatal accidents and substance abuse.   This is a reflection of the fallen and sinful world that we live in, which many accept as a norm. But should we? As a Christ follower, I know I’m in the world, but not of the world, and I recognize that this complete abnormality is far from what God originally created and intended for humanity.    What then can we do? Pray first. Why? Because if we don’t pray, we accept the abnormality as the status quo and in essence, underestimate the power of God. Even worse, we overlook the nature of God and His relationship to this world. “Prayer is rebelling against status quo.”, said David Wells, former Gordon-Conwell professor of Historical and Systematic Theology.

What is prayer?

We all pray. Prayer is simply talking to God about the things you are thinking about. If you are concerned, worried or consumed with something in your mind. Just say to God, "Help".

There was a time in my life when I did not feel The Father’s Love. Honestly, I didn’t feel very much love at all. I grew up with a dad that was full of rage, and anger and hostility.

It left me with a broken heart, full of pain, sorrow, anger, resentment, fear and anxiety. I carried this pain and unforgiveness most of my life.

Several years after I came to faith in Christ there were many books written about praising God in all circumstances. This was very confusing to me. My earlier years as a believer were difficult and I wanted to be honest before God.  I felt I was being dishonest when I would try to praise Him for the struggles I was having. I was not going to pray for something I didn’t mean. There were many things I was enjoying and discovering about God during this journey, so I was focused on those things.

For many years, my patients would tell me about things going on in their lives and I would tell them that I would pray for them. Most of the time I would follow through later in my personal time with the Lord. Admittedly, there were times I would get busy and forget about praying for them. A few years ago, I decided to get serious about praying for others.
